Almost everyone into wrestling entertainments for at least the last five years knows who Cm Punk is, especially if you are a WWE fan. almost lean in stature and far from what beastly built wrestlers like Goldberg, Brock, Don Moraco, Steiner etc look like, well this awesome "not too liked" dude quickly made a name for himself. Defeating wrestlers like Wade Barret and John Cena? Are you chiding me? C'mon throw the spotlight on this guy. This is the new face of the Wwe. This is the new Rock. Anyways some time back for reasons best known to him, he left the Wwe and wanted to try something different and what other way place did he think he could fit in? The UFC of course. Fast forward, fast forward. And he's in attendance watching a Mickey Gall fight after some training and on-going. Incidentally, Mickey Gall wins impressively and calls out Cm Punk issuing something you could call a challenge. Punk steps out of the crowd, into the ring and Dana seals the hook up. Ok so we officially have a fight. To the next paragraph and let's do this.
Both fighters are busy psyching themselves up, with Punk doing more of bouncing and Gall pacing about then stopped all caved in, with one leg forward like he's about to collide with a pit-bull. Punks still busy bouncing with weight being exchanged on both legs like Jet Lee in the "Fist of Legend film" where he fights his masters son for the school. At this time, looking at Gall, he's changed his countenance into 100% predator hatred attitude, enough to scare off anybody with a wavering fighting ambition. His eyes, unmoving head and fixed ready to go body only oozing out what can be understood as a predator in search for dinner. "Fight" the referee orders and both men approach each other. Now Punk just keeps going, stretches out his left hand to jab and finish with the right, which i didn't think was wise unless you are looking for a one hit knockout. While Gall was looking neutral until the last minute and goes for a take down. Who makes impact? It's gall because he's down hooking up to punks legs as punk is about to punch empty air. Gall gets the take down and Punk's trying to balance things up with some Jiu jutsu ground game which was looking cool at the time and the wise thing to do. Then he starts punching just like he does in the Wwe, with the front part of his palm, And rapidly almost making no major impact and causing gall no harm. Gall shields himself, crawls up to punk somehow even when punk is guarded and delivered one of the most ferocious blows i have ever seen anywhere live and on film. And he continues with the onslaught until he again finds his way to punks back alternating between trying to choke and slamming punches at a helpless punk who he wouldn't let get up. And that was the near end as punk quickly taps out only after enduring so much.
Well, Overeem did warn that Punk was making a huge mistake stepping into this Mma stylized arena and maybe he made sense but a lot of people would not see it to count too much because Punk used to fight in the Wwe and is know stranger to brawls. Afterall, they've got steel cages and they get hit hit with steel chairs, ladders and other stuffs. Not to talk about the risky "don't try this at home moves". Plus Brock's also in the UFC and he's doing good. To me Punk got it all wrong by starting the fight with a style he's not used to. He is a wrestler, hence start the fight as a wrestler. I would rather he brushed up his wrestling skills while training than trying to add new skills to the cart that would normally take some years to master. You don't just come out from the streets and lock horns with a pro-fighter expecting miracles such as "lucky punches" to happen. Especially, if the fighter has earned his way into the Mma world. I dont know much about age not been on his side, but after understanding his wrestling game very very well, he may then diversify fully into judo or BJJ. Then finally say, boxing. What's the worth of throwing a thousand useless kicks, when you can perfect just one? Ask Bruce Lee.
